This song riffs on reality vs. TV, reality TV, and self-determination. It challengers listeners to step forward as active participants in constructing our culture, rather than "passive recipients of rules we use to test...on what we shower praise, how we spend our days, our cultural mores, our norms, our styles...how we see the destiny of our societies, what we believe defines us as humanity...." Themes it addresses while framing self-expression-as-liberation include consumerism, the trap of defining one's work in terms of a paycheck, hedonism & egoism, public spending priorities (e.g., "defense appropriations or money for education"), and our "apathy, audacity and rapacity" towards the environment.
This is also the first song I've recorded based entirely on my vocals -- the instrumental track is basically composed of layered excerpts from a spontaneous beat-box that I kicked in the studio after we finished recording the lyrics. I hope you dig it....
